How Behavioral Biometrics Enable PSD2 Compliance

July 19, 2018

BehavioSec is highlighting its technology’s compliance with Payment Services Directive 2 (PSD2), the European Union’s major regulation for payment services and transactions. How Behavioral Biometrics Enable PSD2 Compliance

In a new post on its website, BehavioSec points out the PSD2 now requires ‘Strong Customer Authentication‘ (SCA), which it defines as the use of two of three authentication factors – something the user knows, something they possess, and some kind of inherent trait. BehavioSec’s solution combines two of these. By assessing patterns in end users’ behavior, such as how they hold their smartphones or how they type on a keyboard, BehavioSec’s behavioral biometrics essentially look at an inherent quality in the user – something the user can’t easily change, and which can’t easily be mimicked by fraudsters. And by combining this with a password – something the user knows – the system complies with the SCA component of PSD2.

To be clear, this is true of any behavioral biometrics solution that can be used in conjunction with password or PIN-based security. But in highlighting its own solution, BehavioSec asserts that it offers “low false positive alerts” and “detailed information for real-time fraud detection and forensic purposes.” Furthermore, the company notes that its platform can be deployed on-premise or through a cloud platform, among other benefits.

BehavioSec’s PSD2 compliance reflects a broader opportunity for all kinds of biometric authentication solutions as a range of companies seek to comply with the European Union’s new regulatory framework. With the risk of hack attacks and data breaches always present, there’s a stronger case than ever to be made for these technologically innovative solutions.
