Biometric Smart Cards: IDEX Delivers First TrustedBio Shipment

Biometric Smart Cards: IDEX Delivers First TrustedBio Shipment

IDEX Biometrics has officially sent out its first TrustedBio shipment. The company unveiled the new system-on-chip solution back in February, and announced that it had already secured its first customer only one day later.

TrustedBio was designed to reduce the manufacturing cost of biometric smart cards, with an eye towards mass production and commercialization. The first customer was a tier 1 smart card manufacturer that will be moving forward with customer pilots in the fourth quarter of 2020. The card will also enter mass production before the end of the year.

The date of the shipment is in keeping with the production timeline that IDEX laid out at the beginning of the year. The company indicated that its solutions (including TrustedBio) will be featured in other smart card pilots and product launches over the course of the next year.

“With this expansion of our portfolio, we are enabling a price point for potential demand in the hundreds of millions of cards from issuers and manufacturers,” said IDEX CEO Vince Graziani.

“The improvement in card cost structure is disruptive and will propel the adoption of biometric cards by bringing the cost closer in line with the cost of standard dual interface cards.”

IDEX has repeatedly highlighted the utility of biometric smart cards during the COVID-19 pandemic. The technology is more hygienic than contact-based alternatives, and is still secure enough to support higher payment caps for contactless transactions.
