Vivo S5 Launches With In-Display Fingerprint Scanner

November 18, 2019

Biometrics News - Vivo S5 Launches With In-Display Fingerprint Scanner

Vivo has announced the launch of the Vivo S5 smartphone in China, featuring an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Biometric security in smartphones has been a major focus for years now. Apple popularized fingerprint recognition when it the released Touch ID on the iPhone 5S back in 2013, and since then most manufacturers have included some form of biometric authentication in their phones.

With the recent rise in popularity of facial recognition — again, owing to Apple’s influence over the market by including emerging technologies in their massively successful products — many smartphone manufacturers have begun looking for ways to make them less obtrusive, or in the case of Google’s Pixel line, getting rid of them altogether.

One way to make this tech less obtrusive that has become increasingly common in newer phones lately is the use of in-display technology. By placing sensors beneath a phone’s display, manufacturers can have smaller bezels and avoid some unsightly notches.

The Vivo S5 is continuing this trend by including a fingerprint scanner under its 6.44-inch Super AMOLED punch-hole display. The S5 comes equipped with four rear cameras, a large 4,100mAh battery, and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 712 processor.

Currently only available in China, the Vivo S5 is available in three colors: Icelandic Love Song, Phantom Blue, and Phantom Black, and will begin shipping to consumers on November 22nd.
