Biometrics-Powered Airport Automation is Taking Off: Acuity

August 13, 2018

“The age of seamless international travel has arrived. Integrated, frictionless passenger facilitation is the next wave of biometric automation for expedited travel.” – Maxine Most, Principal, Acuity Market Intelligence

Biometric Airport Automation to See 20% CAGR Through 2022: Acuity

Acuity Market Research is predicting considerable growth for the airport biometrics market over the next few years.

Entitled, “The Airport Automated Biometric Facilitation Report:
Form Curb to Gate,” the report predicts that between 2018 and 2022, annual revenues in the global airport biometric automation market will grow from $156 million to $389 million. That’s a 20 percent growth rate.

What’s more, Acuity says that by 2020, the revenues – $261 million at that point – will only reflect 17 percent of the total addressable market, which entails “nearly 100,000 check-in, auto bag drop, and border control, security checkpoint and boarding kiosks and eGates will be deployed,” according to a report preview.

Looking to a regional breakdown, Acuity says that Europe will be “the unquestionable revenue leader throughout the forecast period”, accounting for over 30 percent of global revenues between this year and 2020. But, “given the projected growth of airport infrastructure and air passenger numbers in Asia, these market dynamics will shift significantly by 2030,” Acuity says.

“ABC eGates, and ABC and APC Kiosks are established solutions that have been widely deployed,” says Acuity Principal Maxine Most. “The next wave of Automated Biometric Facilitation includes AIC Kiosks, ABD Units, and AIB eGates that – while in their market infancy – are having enormous impact where they have been deployed. This includes Singapore’s Changi Airport’s curb-to-gate Fast and Seamless Travel initiative (FAST) and the United States’ Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Biometric Exit AIB trials that have proven so successful that both Orlando and San Jose airports have committed to full deployment.”

It all tracks with the trends in recent news, as a growing number of airports and airlines embrace biometric passenger processing technologies to help improve service and cut costs, while border authorities like the US Customs and Border Protection agency seek to implement biometric security systems in collaboration with air travel partners. For a detailed analysis, the full report is available from Acuity Market Intelligence’s website.
