Dating app Bumble has launched a suite of new safety and compatibility features, including optional ID verification, enhanced matching capabilities, and expanded protective measures for users. The rollout comes amid growing concerns about romance fraud, which has recently led to significant financial losses, including a $23.6 million scam affecting over 5,000 Australian citizens.
The new ID verification system allows users to validate their identity by submitting government-issued identification documents, following similar initiatives by other dating platforms like Tinder’s selfie-based verification system. Verified profiles receive a distinctive badge, and users can filter potential matches based on verification status or request that their connections complete the verification process. The feature is currently available in 11 markets, including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, France, and India, with plans for further expansion.
Through its updated Discover feature, Bumble has enhanced its matching capabilities by enabling users to refine their experience through interest badges, dating intentions, and detailed profile information. Internal research by the company indicates that 70 percent of women users in India consider mutual interests, values, and lifestyle preferences as primary factors when planning initial dates.
The platform has also introduced a Share Date feature, which enables users to share meeting details with trusted contacts directly through the application. The functionality includes the ability to provide real-time updates to date plans, adding an additional layer of safety and accountability to in-person meetings. The feature follows a growing trend in social platforms implementing safety-focused features, similar to those seen in other digital identity applications designed for personal safety.
Bumble has expanded its Review Before You Send capability, which previously only applied to the Compliments feature, to now cover regular chat messages. The system alerts users when a message may contain inappropriate content, providing an opportunity for revision before transmission. The enhancement is part of broader industry efforts to combat harassment and maintain user safety on digital platforms.
The new features represent Bumble’s continued development of its platform functionality, building upon existing safety measures while introducing new compatibility tools for its user base. The implementation of government ID verification reflects a growing trend in digital identity verification, as seen in the broader adoption of digital identity documents across various sectors.
