The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has partnered with AuthenticID to enhance the enrollment process for the state’s mobile driver’s licenses (mDLs) program. AuthenticID, a provider of identity verification and fraud prevention solutions, will supply its biometric authentication technology to ensure secure identity verification for California residents, marking a significant advancement in the state’s digital identity infrastructure.
California initiated its mDL pilot program last year, involving 1.5 million participants. The program allows residents to download their mDL through the California DMV mobile app, with options to add it to Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, or the California DMV Wallet. Since the program’s launch, over 1.3 million mDLs have been issued, demonstrating strong public adoption of the technology.
The implementation includes face matching and liveness detection technologies to provide both security and convenience during the verification process. AuthenticID’s solution enables residents to verify their identities privately within seconds, incorporating safeguards against increasingly sophisticated identity fraud attempts, including deepfake attacks.
California is currently one of 13 states that have implemented mDLs, joining early adopters like Iowa and Maryland in the nationwide shift toward digital identification. With additional states planning to introduce similar programs, industry analysts project that 50 percent of the US adult population will have access to digital credentials and mobile IDs within the next 12-18 months.
Reed Taussig, CEO of AuthenticID, stated, “We’re proud to partner with the State of California’s DMV to ensure users can safely and securely verify their identities. Our ongoing innovation delivers our customers the highest levels of security, privacy, and customer experience so that users can verify their identities effortlessly with the devices and technology they trust.”
Ajay Gupta, Chief Digital Transformation Officer at California DMV, indicated that the California DMV Wallet will continue to expand its services, noting, “The California DMV Wallet will continue to add public and private sector services to make Californian digital lives easier with an innovative, inclusive and privacy preserving digital credential.”
This expansion aligns with the DMV’s broader digital transformation initiatives, which have included hackathons and partnerships with technology providers to explore innovative uses of mDLs.
