The University of Miami Health System and the Miller School of Medicine have teamed up with identity technology provider CLEAR to develop a biometric login system for patients and employees, enabling them to more easily access the digital records stored in the healthcare network’s “UHealth” system.
CLEAR is best known for pioneering an expedited passenger screening system for airports that allows travelers who register in the program to quickly verify their identity at airport security with a fingerprint or iris scan. But the company has been expanding into new areas in recent years, with its latest moves taking it into the realm of digital identity: Earlier this month, CLEAR announced a partnership with LinkedIn that would enable its members to easily verify their accounts on the professional networking platform.
Now, with its UHealth partnership, CLEAR appears to be expanding into selfie-based identity verification. In a statement announcing the collaboration, the organizations indicated that CLEAR will enable UHealth patients to verify their identity for free using a government-issued ID and a selfie photo, and that they will be able to reset their password within the UHealth app using a selfie image.
The “Powered by CLEAR” platform was described as UHealth’s “digital front door for patient account management and check-in.” UHealth employees will also be able to manage their credentials using the system, with both functionalities being described as part of an initial phase of collaboration between CLEAR and the healthcare network.
“Technology has emerged as a driving force in improving overall efficiencies,” said University of Miami Health System CIO David Reis. “By collaborating with CLEAR, we can enhance the patient journey while also improving security in our digital spaces.”
The organizations did not provide a timeline for the rollout of the new passwordless login system.
Their announcement comes as CLEAR’s passenger processing system goes live at its 52nd airport, Connecticut’s Bradley International Airport.
