Shell and WEX are releasing a new mobile app that will allow drivers to pay for gas without needing to leave their cars. WEX Fleet DriverDash processes payments electronically, using a smartphone’s biometric features to authenticate each transaction.
“DriverDash delivers increased security and control for fleet managers, while offering drivers a faster and easier experience at Shell stations,” said WEX Product Marketing Senior VP Peggy Watson. “Businesses will see less downtime for fueling, fewer clumsy receipts, and better transaction security.”
The proprietary app was built by WEX in collaboration with Shell, and is geared toward individual consumers and enterprise drivers alike. DriverDash is currently being offered to drivers at roughly 13,000 Shell service stations and upwards of 25,000 Shell-branded fueling sites in the United States. Depending on the station, drivers may need to step outside to refuel their car, but DriverDash should enable a true racing pit stop at numerous Full Serve locations.
Of course, this is not the first time Shell has explored new payment methods for drivers on the go, nor is it the only company to do so. The energy giant previously partnered with Apple Pay and PayPal to develop a similar feature for Jaguar vehicles, More recently, Visa teamed up with SiriusXM to leverage the latter’s e-wallet system for mobile payments.
