Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has reached a significant milestone in its nol digital payment system modernization project, completing 40 percent of the planned upgrade. The Dh550 million initiative aims to transition the existing card-based ticketing system to an advanced account-based ticketing (ABT) platform, with completion targeted for Q3 2026.
The upgrade marks a major evolution of the nol system, which was first introduced on September 9, 2009. The new ABT platform will enable users to manage their travel accounts digitally, offering enhanced flexibility and cashless payment options across Dubai’s transportation network. The modernization follows global trends in transit payment systems, as cities worldwide move away from traditional card-based systems toward more flexible digital solutions.
Key features of the modernization include integration with digital wallets and contactless transaction capabilities, designed to enhance security and improve efficiency for daily commuters. The system upgrade will facilitate seamless travel across Dubai’s interconnected transport modes while incorporating the latest developments in fintech and smart travel solutions. The advancement reflects the broader industry movement toward mobile transit ticketing solutions, which have gained significant traction in major metropolitan areas.
“The nol system upgrade is a significant step towards modernizing our public transportation system, matching global best practices in urban mobility and digital payments,” said Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA. “This upgrade will redefine how residents and visitors navigate Dubai’s transportation network, ensuring a seamless and efficient travel experience.”
The RTA is implementing the upgrade through a structured, phased approach to ensure a smooth transition to the new system. The modernization effort includes enhanced security features and authentication protocols, reflecting the growing importance of secure digital payments in public transportation. The initiative reinforces Dubai’s position as a pioneer in smart mobility solutions, focusing on providing residents and international travelers with an integrated, cashless travel experience that meets global standards for urban transportation.
The new system builds upon Dubai’s existing smart city infrastructure, incorporating advanced payment security measures similar to those being implemented in other leading markets. Like recent developments in digital payment security enhancements in Malaysia, the upgraded nol system will feature robust security protocols to protect user data and transactions.
