Enterprise adoption of passkeys for workforce authentication is gaining significant momentum, according to recent research from the FIDO Alliance. The shift comes as major technology providers like Microsoft have announced plans to replace traditional passwords with passkeys for over one billion users in response to a 200 percent increase in cyberattacks.
The research reveals that a majority of enterprises have either completed or are currently implementing passkey deployments, using both device-bound and synced passkey solutions. Recent academic research has highlighted important security considerations for both types of passkeys, with device-bound options offering enhanced security for high-risk scenarios while synced passkeys provide greater convenience for general workforce use. Organizations are taking a strategic approach by prioritizing passkey rollout to employees who access sensitive data and applications, supported by comprehensive training and documentation programs.
Companies that have implemented passkeys report multiple benefits, including enhanced security posture, improved user experience, reduced costs, increased productivity, and advancement of digital transformation initiatives. Major security providers like Thales have introduced enterprise-scale solutions to help organizations manage the transition to passkeys, particularly in complex enterprise environments. The adoption of passkeys has also contributed to a decrease in the use of legacy authentication methods, which are often associated with security vulnerabilities, higher costs, and usability challenges.
Despite the advantages, some organizations face implementation hurdles. Concerns about complexity and costs have created hesitation among some enterprises, while others report uncertainty about optimal deployment strategies. These challenges highlight the need for enhanced education and implementation guidance within the industry, which the FIDO Alliance has begun addressing through recently published implementation guides and best practices.
The importance of effective technology adoption is further emphasized by WalkMe’s State of Digital Adoption 2025 Report, which indicates that enterprises lost over $104 million in 2024 due to underused technology. While this report focuses primarily on AI adoption, its findings about technology implementation are relevant to authentication solutions like passkeys.
“Over a decade of innovation in digital adoption has shown us one truth: technology alone doesn’t deliver results – people do,” said Dan Adika, Co-Founder & CEO of WalkMe. “This year’s findings outline actionable steps leaders can take to close the readiness gap and turn their AI investments into impact.”
“WalkMe’s research highlights a clear need for organizations to bridge the AI adoption gap, and digital adoption platforms play a vital role in enabling organizations to maximize their AI transformation efforts,” said Andrea Lippin, Managing Director, Talent & Organization at Accenture.
