Ethiopia’s national digital identity registration program is expanding across the Tigray region as part of the country’s “Digital Ethiopia 2025” vision. The Fayda Digital ID initiative, which aims to establish a foundation for an accessible and inclusive digital economy, is currently operating through 41 registration centers in the region. The expansion follows significant progress in national enrollment, with over 7 million citizens already registered across the country.
The registration infrastructure consists of 26 permanent centers and 15 mobile units operated by Ethio-Telecom’s Northern Region, which has been providing digital ID services including registration and printing for eight months. Over 235,000 citizens have received their digital IDs through these facilities. The regional expansion marks an important development, especially considering Fayda’s recent establishment as the primary form of identification for banking services nationwide.
“We are expanding our reach by enabling customers to access services either at fixed centers or through mobile registration units deployed to various locations,” said Mulu Woldeselassie, Operations Director of Ethio-Telecom’s Northern Region. The organization plans to increase the number of registration centers in response to growing demand.
The program features public awareness campaigns to educate citizens about the benefits of the Fayda Digital ID. Registrants have highlighted the ID’s value for banking services and passport applications, as well as its role in verifying legal status and accessing both government and private sector services. The system has proven its versatility through integration with educational institutions, where it’s being used to register students and streamline administrative processes.
The initiative employs MOSIP-based digital ID technology and receives support from the World Bank. MOSIP (Modular Open Source Identity Platform) is a robust framework that has been successfully implemented in several countries for national digital identity programs. As part of the broader Digital Ethiopia 2025 strategy, the government aims to enroll all eligible citizens in the digital ID project by 2025. The system is designed to support rapid and reliable service delivery while providing mechanisms to combat fraud and illegal activities.
