What to Expect at WWDC 2018

May 24, 2018

“…there’s now even more reason to speculate that Apple will seek to differentiate its high-end iPads with the integration of its expensive Face ID system.”

WWDC

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is right around the corner, and speculation is mounting over what new gadgets could be revealed during the event.

Most of the hype revolves around potential new iPads and a new version of the iPhone SE, marking the first extension of Apple’s (relatively) budget line of iPhone models. There have long been rumors that Apple is working to bring the 3D facial recognition system of the iPhone X to its newest iPad tablet devices, and with the company having brought the premium stylus feature to its most basic iPad model this past March, there’s now even more reason to speculate that Apple will seek to differentiate its high-end iPads with the integration of its expensive Face ID system.

The anticipated iPhone SE 2, meanwhile, is not expected to feature Face ID, but to carry on the tradition of Touch ID, Apple’s pioneering fingerprint scanning system. There’s always the chance that the device could incorporate the kind of in-display fingerprint scanning that’s now appearing on devices from some of Apple’s lower-tier rivals, but as always Apple has remained tight-lipped about the new device – indeed, it isn’t even clear at this point that the iPhone SE 2 exists.

Other hotly anticipated offerings include a refreshed line of MacBooks and iMacs featuring 8th generation Intel processors, a new multi-device charging unit called AirPower, and iOS 12, the latest update in Apple’s operating system. Whether any this actually materializes will be revealed soon enough, with WWDC slated to run from June 4th to 8th.
