FaceTec, a leader in 3D facial biometric authentication technology, has unveiled its new UR Encoder Software, designed to enhance digital identity verification through the implementation of UR Codes. These specialized 2D barcodes contain facial data from trusted sources, including 3D FaceMaps or 2D photos, alongside personal identification information. The launch comes as the company continues its expansion into the mobile driver’s license and government ID sector.
The UR Codes incorporate 72 bytes of trusted face data using FaceTec’s proprietary privacy-preserving minified vector format. Each code includes an 84-byte digital signature to ensure data integrity, while the unique URID# and Hash can be independently stored and verified by the encoding entity. The development builds upon FaceTec’s established track record in high-performance biometric matching.
The verification system enables matching of encoded face data with FaceTec’s 3D FaceMaps or ISO 19794-5 style face photos provided by users, supporting both 3D:2D and 2D:2D face matching capabilities. The technology includes internal security features such as Hashes and Checksums, with verification occurring during each scan through the UR Matcher. The system meets increasing demands for secure digital identity verification across government and commercial sectors.
Created for implementation by issuing authorities including DMVs, passport issuers, law enforcement agencies, schools, and employers, the UR Encoder Software operates within the issuing authority’s firewall. It uses a unique private encryption key to cryptographically sign each UR Code, implementing Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithms (ECDSA) for security validation. The solution arrives as various states across the U.S. are actively developing and implementing digital driver’s license programs.
“The FaceTec engineers have put tremendous effort into the development of the UR Encoder Software, and we are thrilled to empower issuing authorities all over the world to begin using UR Codes to increase trust in their countries,” said Josh Rose, CTO of FaceTec.
The software is being offered with a free, perpetual license to government identity issuers, non-profits, and similar not-for-profit organizations. The licensing arrangement extends to commercial entities contracted to print UR Codes on behalf of these organizations, reflecting FaceTec’s commitment to advancing secure digital identity solutions across the public sector.
