In a pioneering effort to streamline travel, TECH5 has joined forces with Auctorizium, a company based in Singapore, to introduce a groundbreaking Digital Travel Credential (DTC) system in Finland. This initiative, in collaboration with Finnair, Finavia, and the Finnish police, aims to simplify the boarding and border control processes for travelers using cutting-edge mobile ID and biometric technology.
At the heart of this initiative is Finland’s DTC, a digital counterpart to the traditional passport. Travelers can easily create a DTC using a dedicated mobile app, which involves taking a selfie and uploading a passport photo. The app’s facial recognition technology, powered by TECH5’s advanced AI algorithms, then verifies the user’s identity, facilitating the creation of a digital travel credential on their smartphone.
The Role of Biometrics and PKI in Secure Travel
TECH5 brings its expertise in biometric technology to the table, employing its proprietary T5-OmniMatch SDK to ensure secure and accurate identification. Auctorizium, on the other hand, contributes its specialized knowledge in ePassport Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and validation services. PKI plays a crucial role in safeguarding travelers’ biometric data, utilizing a pair of cryptographic keys to encrypt and decrypt information securely, ensuring that only authorized entities can access sensitive data.
Auctorizium has developed several key components of the DTC system, including wallet apps for Android and iOS, a secure transmission protocol, and an Inspection System for processing DTCs. The partnership with TECH5 allowed Auctorizium to leverage TECH5’s biometric expertise, ensuring the project’s success by combining strengths and focusing on core competencies.
The Pilot’s Impact and Future Prospects
The pilot project kicked off in late August 2023, with the first digital passenger verification conducted on September 1 for a flight from Helsinki to London. Since then, the project has expanded, allowing travelers to use their DTCs for 22 Finnair destinations. Over 200 passengers have already benefited from this technology, experiencing border control checks that take less than eight seconds on average.
Funded by the European Commission, the pilot’s outcomes are set to influence upcoming EU regulations regarding DTC use, potentially setting a new standard for international travel.
