“Card Tech will use FPC’s T-Shape sensor module in a forthcoming dual interface card for contact-based and contactless transactions.”
Fingerprint Cards (FPC) has won over another new partner in its bid for marketshare in the emerging biometric payment cards space. The company has teamed up with Italian biometric smart cards specialist Card Tech.
Card Tech will use FPC’s T-Shape sensor module in a forthcoming dual interface card for contact-based and contactless transactions. Designed specifically for integration into smart and payment cards, the T-Shape module has also been incorporated into IDEMIA’s F-Code payment card solution, for which a trial program recently got underway in collaboration with Japanese bank JCB.
In a statement, Card Tech said that it expects its new biometric payment card to enter a “testing phase” in the latter half of this year, with external testing to begin in Q4. Mass production is slated to begin in the first half of 2019.
Elaborating further on the company’s plans, Card Tech CEO Fabrizio Borracci said its aim is “to be the biometric technology enabler for all tier-two smart card integrators”, with the company targeting smart card manufacturers globally. Borracci emphasized the price positioning of Card Tech’s solution, asserting that it “has been one of the key areas of focus and we did everything possible to make it extremely competitive”.
