Mobile Tech Market is Moving Toward Full-Screen Fingerprint Biometrics, says Precise CEO

Mobile Tech Market is Moving Toward Full-Screen Fingerprint Biometrics, says Precise CEO

Full-screen fingerprint scanning could be the next big thing in mobile biometrics, according to comments from Precise Biometrics‘ CEO in the company’s latest quarterly update.

“The technological development within mobile devices continues and is developing towards having the fingerprint sensor over the entire display,” said Stefan K. Persson in the update. “The first product with this technology is expected to be launched during the end of 2019, at the earliest.”

It’s an intriguing hint at what the fingerprint biometrics specialist is working on with its smartphone partners, pointing at the next evolution in mobile fingerprint scanning after sensors started going under device displays last year.

This isn’t to say that it’s Precise Biometrics’ main focus, with Fredrikson outlining a number of activities underway including applications of Precise Biometrics’ technology in smart cars, and Proof of Concept trials of biometric payment cards, with “modest initial volumes” expected during the fourth quarter of this year. Its new Precise YOUNiQ solution, which combines fingerprint, facial, and behavioral recognition with geodata, is also an area of intensifying focus, with Precise Biometrics aiming for commercialization in 2020.

This is all very important for Precise Biometrics, which has struggled against the same challenges that have faced other biometrics specialists in the mobile market as ASPs have dropped over the past couple of years. Regarding its fiscal results for the first quarter of 2019, Precise Biometrics saw net sales of SEK 12,144,000, marking a 33.1 percent drop since Q1 of 2018; and its operating result was a loss of SEK 7,868,000, compared to an operating loss of SEK 2,033,000 a year ago.

Looking ahead, the company’s leadership “expect 2019 to be a challenging year from a financial perspective considering the volatility in the market for mobile devices,” Fredrikson said. But he emphasized that the overall biometrics market is growing, and that Precise Biometrics is on solid financial footing to attack its new business areas. “We are confident that the initiatives we are conducting during 2019 will have an effect during 2020 and onwards,” he said.
