The Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) has expanded its Digital Driver’s License (mDL) and ID program, enabling residents with Samsung Galaxy devices to store their state IDs within Samsung Wallet. This integration leverages Samsung’s Knox security platform, which provides hardware-level security for biometric data, ensuring that Georgia residents can securely access their digital ID using facial recognition or PIN entry.
According to DDS Commissioner Spencer R. Moore, this development aligns with Georgia’s ongoing digital transformation initiatives while maintaining compliance with federal identity verification standards.
The digital ID is currently accepted at select TSA PreCheck checkpoints, including Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, where TSA’s biometric verification capabilities are being extended. The TSA recently confirmed it will continue accepting mobile driver’s licenses beyond the REAL ID enforcement date of May 2025, further supporting Georgia’s digital ID expansion. Georgia’s Samsung Wallet integration follows similar digital ID implementations in other states, such as Missouri, highlighting a growing trend toward mobile-based identification options.
The enrollment process requires users to scan their physical ID, complete facial biometric verification, and set up secure authentication through Samsung Wallet. This multi-factor verification ensures that the ID remains secure and accessible only to the registered user. While Georgia’s digital ID option is voluntary and complementary to physical IDs, the DDS stresses that physical credentials are still required for certain interactions, such as with law enforcement.
By offering this digital option, the DDS aims to improve convenience and security for residents, contributing to Georgia’s broader objectives in digital transformation. The initiative is part of an evolving landscape where mobile and biometric technology increasingly support secure and accessible identity verification solutions.
