Atlanta, Georgia-based Global Payments has announced its support for Samsung Pay in China. The move will enable China-based merchants to use Global Payments transaction processing for Samsung Pay payments.
In a statement, Global Payments highlighted Samsung Pay’s KNOX security apparatus and its magnetic secure transmission technology, which makes it compatible with swipe-based payment terminals when NFC is not available. Global Product and Innovation SVP Frank Young added that the company “is delighted to bring innovative commerce to merchants in China by supporting Samsung Pay.”
The support comes as Samsung Pay seeks traction after its debut in the country last week. Its chief rival, Apple Pay, has already been in operation in China since February, and has proven to be a huge hit in the country, defying some analysts’ expectations. That has helped it to establish a solid foothold in the mPayment market; now the question is whether Samsung Pay can do the same. Global Payments’ support could prove to be an important component of Samsung’s efforts to make that happen.
