Google’s Find My Device app is enhancing user security with a new biometric security option.
A recent app update, discovered by tipster AssembleDebug in conjunction with Android Authority, revealed that this new feature allows users to sign in quickly using their fingerprints. The biometric security layer aims to bolster personal security, working in tandem with the “don’t ask again” option for Google account sign-ins, ensuring that credentials saved on devices are backed by an extra verification layer.
In addition to the biometric security enhancement, Google teased a “Remote Lock” feature during its I/O 2024 event. The feature will allow users to remotely lock their devices using their phone number and a security challenge, providing additional security for lost or stolen devices. Although the framework for Remote Lock has appeared in a recent Play Services update, its full functionality is not expected to roll out until later this year.
The introduction of biometric security and Remote Lock is part of Google’s broader strategy to expand and strengthen the security of its Find My Device network. The network, which started rolling out to more users earlier in May, has already been spotted on devices in Japan, the U.K., and the U.S., with support extending to an increasing number of smartphones, including the Pixel 8 and Moto Razr Plus.
By adding these security features, Google aims to provide users with greater peace of mind and more robust protection for their devices. The biometric security layer, in particular, addresses concerns about the safety of saved credentials, ensuring that only the authorized user can access the device.
These enhancements represent Google’s latest significant steps toward more secure and user-friendly technology.
