Google has expanded the availability of screen-off fingerprint unlock functionality in the latest Android 16 Developer Preview 3, extending the feature beyond the Pixel 9 series to older Pixel devices. The enhancement allows users to unlock their phones by using the fingerprint scanner without first waking the display, marking a significant evolution in Google’s biometric authentication strategy since the company temporarily moved away from fingerprint sensors with the Pixel 4 series.
The new feature can be activated through the device’s Settings menu by navigating to Security & Privacy, then Device Unlock > Face & Fingerprint Unlock, where users can toggle on the Screen-off Fingerprint Unlock option. The functionality maintains an active fingerprint scanner even when the screen is powered down, streamlining the device unlock process. The implementation builds upon Google’s recent efforts to enhance biometric authentication security on Android devices.
The development matches the capabilities already offered by other manufacturers in the Android ecosystem, including Samsung and Xiaomi. Samsung, in particular, has been a pioneer in mobile biometric innovation, having introduced various fingerprint authentication technologies across its flagship devices. The feature is particularly beneficial for users who prefer to keep their screens off to minimize distractions or optimize battery life.
Android 16’s stable release is scheduled for the end of June 2025, with Pixel devices receiving priority access to the update. The rollout timeline for other Android device manufacturers remains to be announced. The release continues Google’s pattern of introducing new security features through its Pixel line before broader Android deployment, similar to its recent Identity Check feature for enhanced location-based security.
The latest preview build also introduces several additional features, including Auracast Bluetooth support for enhanced hearing aid functionality, a text outline option to improve readability, and Live Updates notifications for tracking ongoing app activities. These improvements complement Google’s broader initiative to strengthen device security while enhancing user convenience across its Android ecosystem.
