Google has enhanced its Find My Device app with a new feature that lets users share and view real-time locations of their contacts. The update, released as part of the March Pixel Drop, builds upon Google’s recent security improvements to the platform, which included the addition of biometric authentication requirements for sensitive operations.
The updated Find My Device app now integrates location sharing and tracking capabilities that were previously housed within Google Maps. A new “People” tab displays real-time locations of approved contacts, showing their current addresses, distance from the user, and last update timestamps. Users can filter their contacts using “Sharing with you” and “You’re sharing with” categories for improved management of location sharing preferences. The consolidation follows Google’s broader strategy of streamlining its location-based services while enhancing privacy controls.
The app’s interface now features a prominent map view at the top of the screen that displays the user’s current location alongside their devices and contacts. Users can manage their Location Sharing settings and switch between Google accounts through the profile menu in the top-right corner of the application. The changes support Google’s Identity Check system, which implements location-based biometric security measures for Android devices.
The “People” tab functionality is currently in beta testing phase and is being gradually rolled out through Google Play. While some users may not have immediate access to these features through official channels, the option exists to sideload the updated APK, though this approach requires careful verification of sources to maintain security. Given recent concerns about tracking alerts and privacy issues in Android’s location services, Google has implemented additional security measures in this release.
The consolidation of location tracking features brings the Find My Device app’s capabilities more in line with similar offerings in the market. The update represents a significant enhancement to the app’s utility by centralizing device and contact location management within a single interface, while maintaining the robust security infrastructure that Google has developed for its location-based services.
