Google Wallet has expanded its features to include hotel key support, in an update that allows users to add hotel keys to their Google Wallet, similar to adding a debit or credit card.
After adding the key via a website or app, users can unlock hotel doors by touching their Android device to the door knob. The Clarion Hotel Post in Gothenburg, Sweden, is the first to implement this feature, with more hotels expected to follow.
The update echoes the capabilities that Apple Wallet introduced three years ago, which included office keys, digital ID cards, and hotel keys. With Google Wallet now supporting similar features, the competition in the digital wallet space intensifies.
Hotels must collaborate with Google to enable this feature, ensuring their systems are compatible with Google Wallet. This means that widespread adoption will depend on individual hotel chains’ willingness to integrate this technology. Nevertheless, the move marks a significant step toward more digital and seamless travel experiences.
The process for adding a hotel key to Google Wallet involves visiting the relevant website or app, following specific instructions, and pressing the “Add to Google Wallet” button. Once added, users can unlock doors by simply tapping their device, provided the device is unlocked.
As the feature gains traction, it is expected to become a standard offering, further digitalizing and modernizing the travel experience.
