HID Global has finalized its acquisition of Technology Solutions UK Ltd (TSL). TSL is best known as a developer of rugged RFID readers, and currently designs and manufactures handheld devices for a number of different applications.
According to HID Global, TSL’s handheld readers are primarily used for asset management, giving companies an easy way to monitor their inventory and keep tabs on products in their supply chain. However, the readers can ultimately be used in any industry that utilizes RFID tags. For example, they can be used for ticketing, or to verify the identities of animals.
The readers boast RAIN RFID ultra-high frequency (UHF) capabilities, though they are built to accommodate a wide range of use cases and consequently offer support for high-frequency and low-frequency applications in addition to barcode and QR code scanning. TSL does not develop display units, and instead designs readers with an eye toward interoperability. Its portfolio offers support for iOS, Android, and Windows devices, and can also communicate with other devices through a Bluetooth connection. TSL develops its own mobile apps, and offers a developer platform for customers that want to create their own custom applications.
After the acquisition, TSL will operate under the oversight of Marc Bielmann, who leads HID Global’s Identification Technologies Business Area. Bielmann is the company’s Senior Vice President and Head of Identification Technologies, while TSL will exist as a Business Unit within that division.
“The acquisition of TSL builds upon our leadership in identification technologies by adding proven handheld RFID readers to our robust portfolio of tags and Internet of Things enablement solutions,” said HID Global CEO Björn Lidefelt. “Expanding our RFID components business with TSL readers provides our customers a one-stop-shop for a complete RFID offering of hardware and integration tools – all through a shared distribution channel.”
TMC Labs presented HID Global with its 2020 Pandemic Tech Innovation Award for developing a COVID-19 contact tracing solution with Bluetooth technology. HID Global’s Seos tech has since been integrated into the Nymi Band. The company has also made its NOMAD fingerprint readers compatible with iOS devices.
