A comprehensive new report from HID reveals significant shifts in security and identity management, with mobile credentials, biometrics, and artificial intelligence emerging as key drivers of industry transformation. The findings, based on input from 1,800 security professionals, IT leaders, and end users globally, provide detailed insights into emerging technology adoption trends, building on HID’s established position as a leader in secure identity solutions.
The research indicates strong momentum in mobile credential adoption, with 61 percent of security leaders identifying it as a crucial trend. Nearly two-thirds of organizations are either deploying or planning to implement mobile solutions. Meanwhile, 84 percent of respondents maintain a hybrid approach, combining mobile and physical credentials to ensure both flexibility and compliance. The trend corresponds with HID’s recent expansion of its mobile credential ecosystem, including integration with Google Wallet and the launch of new OMNIKEY reader modules.
Biometric technologies have achieved significant market penetration, with 73 percent of organizations incorporating biometrics into their multi-factor authentication strategies. Currently, 35 percent actively use biometric technology, while an additional 13 percent have implementation plans in development. “Biometrics is fast becoming the cornerstone of identity security. Fingerprint, facial, and iris recognition technologies are gaining widespread adoption because they provide an extra layer of protection while offering a seamless user experience,” said Prabhuraj Patil, senior director for Physical Access Control Solutions in ASEAN and the India Subcontinent. The growth reflects broader industry trends, with the global biometric authentication market projected to reach $187.18 billion by 2031.
The report documents substantial interest in AI-powered security solutions, with organizations increasingly deploying AI agents to enhance operations. Key benefits cited include improved efficiency (50 percent) and enhanced real-time data analysis (47 percent). “With the increasing complexity of security threats, companies want systems that can integrate effortlessly with existing infrastructures,” said Ramesh Songukrishnasamy, senior vice president and chief technology officer at HID. The push toward AI integration comes as federal agencies, including the FBI and CISA, are advocating for more sophisticated authentication methods beyond traditional approaches.
A clear trend toward unified security management emerges from the data, with 67 percent of security leaders transitioning to software-driven solutions. More than half of security professionals rate interoperability as “extremely” or “very” important, highlighting the growing emphasis on open platforms that enable seamless integration of diverse security technologies. The shift mirrors the industry’s broader movement toward comprehensive privileged access management solutions that combine multiple security technologies.
Sustainability considerations are also shaping security investments, with 75 percent of security leaders factoring environmental impact into their solution selection process. However, 80 percent of integrators and consultants continue to prioritize security effectiveness and cost over sustainability metrics. The balance between environmental responsibility and security performance represents a growing challenge for organizations implementing new identity management solutions.
