Ho Chi Minh City has launched a new identification card issuance service at Ben Thanh Station along Metro Line No. 1, marking a significant development in the city’s public service infrastructure. The initiative supports Vietnam’s broader digital transformation efforts, which include recent implementations of stricter electronic identification requirements and data protection measures.
The Ho Chi Minh City Police Department has collaborated with the City Urban Railway Management Board and Urban Railway Company No. 1 to establish a mobile ID card and electronic identification account issuance point at Ben Thanh Station, which serves the Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien route. The development comes as Vietnam prepares to implement comprehensive biometric verification requirements across various sectors by 2025.
The new service aims to streamline administrative procedures for citizens by providing convenient access to ID card services within the public transportation network. Students have been designated as a priority group for obtaining ID cards at the metro station location, reflecting an emphasis on supporting educational access and youth services. The approach mirrors successful digital identity initiatives in other Southeast Asian nations, such as the Philippines’ recent milestone of 84 million digital IDs.
“This is an activity to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day (April 30, 1975 – April 30, 2025), while helping people easily carry out administrative procedures online,” said the Ho Chi Minh City Police Department.
The implementation of ID card services at metro stations represents an integration of public transportation and administrative services, following a global trend toward convenient, accessible government services. The mobile issuance points are currently operational and providing citizens with streamlined access to both physical ID cards and electronic identification accounts, supporting Vietnam’s recent telecommunications regulations that require enhanced identity verification.
The development is part of Ho Chi Minh City’s broader initiatives to modernize public services and enhance administrative efficiency through digital solutions and strategic placement of service points at major transportation hubs. The initiative demonstrates Vietnam’s commitment to digital transformation and improved citizen services, positioning the country alongside regional leaders in digital identity implementation.
