The GSMA announced the winners of the 2019 GLOMO Awards at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Presented by Remel London and BBC Africa Business Editor Larry Madowo, the GLOMO Awards honored pioneering work in many different segments of the mobile marketplace.
“The GLOMO’s are a testament to the incredible innovation and ingenuity shaping our industry,” said GSMA CEO John Hoffman. “It is truly an outstanding achievement to have been selected by our esteemed judging panels.”
So who took home the most hardware? Huawei was the night’s biggest winner, following up its strong 2018 performance with five 2019 awards, including Best Smartphone for its Huawei Mate 20 Pro and Best Mobile Technology Breakthrough for its 5G Ran Innovation. Athonet was a close second, taking home four awards for its BubbleCloud solution, including the Outstanding Mobile Technology Award chosen by CTOs.
Ericsson’s 5G high-band Massive MIMO received the award for Best Mobile Network Infrastructure, while the Samsung Galaxy Watch was named the Best Wearable Mobile Technology. Fortnite snagged a pair of awards for Epic Games, including Best Content and Media Innovation and Best Overall Mobile Consumer Innovation. The two prizes indicate that Fortnite is just as much of a sensation in the tech world as it is in entertainment.
Aira, KT, and SK Telecom also took home two awards apiece. Mobile ID World Managing Editor Peter B. Counter was one of the GLOMO judges evaluating a slate of nominees that was announced in January.
