New Huawei Phone Features Ultrasonic Qualcomm Sensor, Precise Biometrics Software

April 19, 2018

Precise Biometrics algorithm software is powering the fingerprint scanning capability of a new smartphone from Huawei.Mobile Biometrics

Unlike the Honor 9, which featured a Fingerprint Cards sensor, the new Honor 10 uses fingerprint sensor from Qualcomm. And unlike Huawei’s recently launched Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS, the sensor is not embedded within the Honor 10’s display, but it is under the cover glass of the device’s front face.

In a statement announcing the integration, Precise Biometrics board chairman Torgny Hellström said, “The design of mobile phones in the higher price segments is increasingly moving towards displays that cover the entire front side,” adding that Precise Biometrics’ integration with an under-glass sensor from Qualcomm “is an important first step in commercializing our products for under display fingerprint solutions.”

Qualcomm’s sensor does indeed represent the company’s new, ultrasonic fingerprint sensor technologies designed for implementation under glass, ceramic, and ultimately displays; and Huawei has clearly demonstrated an interest in pursuing the latter with its Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS luxury device. Meanwhile, longtime Precise Biometrics collaborator Fingerprint Cards says it has also developed in-display fingerprint sensor technology. All of which places Precise Biometrics in a partner ecosystem in hot pursuit of in-display sensor technology for smartphones.
