Huawei continues its support for cutting edge biometric authentication technology with the release of its latest smartphone.
According to GSM Arena, the new Huawei P50 series has become the latest phone in the company’s roster to feature an in-display biometric fingerprint sensor.
Though details on the sensor’s manufacturer have yet to be confirmed, Huawei has a pre-existing relationship with Goodix, having used its sensors a few years ago in the P30 and P30 Pro releases.
The inclusion of in-display biometric technology continues a rapidly growing trend that has the potential to catapult the tech as the next trend in smartphones. This seems particularly likely considering the recent reports that a newly-discovered patent filed by industry leader Apple points to future iPhones having sensors embedded beneath their displays that would allow for optical sensors capable of both facial and fingerprint recognition.
Other details that emerged from the P50 launch show that the Pro version will be powered by the Kirin 9000 processor, and have 8GB of RAM paired with 256GB and 512GB storage options.
Continuing Huawei’s trend of outfitting their phones with powerful cameras, the P50 Pro will have a 13MP selfie sensor, as well as a 50MP primary camera with optical image stabilization, and a 3.9x zoom on a periscope lens.
It is not yet known if the devices will become available in the U.S., or if ongoing tensions with Huawei will impact their availability as was the case with the release of the P30 in 2019. The device will start shipping to customers in China on August 12.
