Missouri has become the fifth state to launch a mobile ID based on technology from IDEMIA — and the first to let end users remotely renew their driver’s license.
The digital ID was developed in collaboration with the Missouri Department of Revenue, with a strong focus on security. The registration process binds the digital ID exclusively to the user’s mobile device, and requires the user to upload images of the front and back of their physical ID, as well as a selfie image. Facial recognition compares the images, thereby verifying that the user is who they claim to be.
Once established, the mobile ID can only be accessed with a fingerprint or face scan, or with a six-digit PIN.
The selfie-based identity verification system echoes the approach taken in Utah, whose Department of Public Safety’s Driver License Division enabled a biometric self-enrolment system for its own virtual driver’s license earlier this year. That solution was the product of a collaboration between the biometrics specialist FaceTec, Scytales, and GET Group North America.
IDEMIA, meanwhile, has previously delivered its own mobile ID technology to Arizona, Delaware, Mississippi, and Oklahoma.
Then there’s Apple, which brought its own mobile driver’s license solution to Georgia earlier this month, after launching it in Arizona, Colorado, and Maryland last year. At the moment, its mobile ID can only be officially used for passenger screening at the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport – and only for members of the TSA PreCheck expedited screening program.
That stands in contrast to Missouri’s Mobile ID, which can be used for identity verification with government agencies, businesses, and other organizations. What’s more, the Missouri Department of Revenue is able to push real-time credential updates to the app, ensuring that organizations verifying it have the most up-to-date information on the end user.
“With the launch of Mobile ID, Missouri is opening up doors to enhanced, convenient services for their residents, such as remote renewal,” said IDEMIA Identity and Security North America’s SVP of Civil Identity, Michael Hash. “We are proud to partner with Missouri to deliver a more secure way for their citizens to protect and verify their identity in our ever-changing digital world.”
