IDEMIA Uses Mobile Onboarding to Enable Contactless Airport Screening

December 7, 2021

“With that experience and privacy in mind, the timing couldn’t be more ideal to launch our ID2Travel offering in North America to improve passenger flow and maintain a touchless experience, while balancing interoperability throughout the broader travel ecosystem.” – Lisa Sullivan, Senior Vice President of Travel and Transport, IDEMIA I&S North America

IDEMIA Uses Mobile Onboarding to Enable Contactless Airport Screening

IDEMIA has officially launched a curb-to-gate biometric passenger processing solution in North America. In announcing the “ID2Travel” solution, the company called it “the only interoperable traveler identity platform covering the entire passenger facilitation ecosystem”.

While ID2Travel facilitates seamless passenger processing at the airport, it’s built upon a mobile-based approach to remote onboarding that has become hugely popular over the past few years, particularly in the financial services sector. A participating traveler is asked to scan their state ID or passport, and to take a selfie photo. Facial recognition technology is used to match the selfie to the identity document, thereby verifying the traveler’s identity.

Now that the traveler’s face is enrolled and confirmed to match their stated identity, they can seamlessly pass through the airport, from check-in to boarding, without the need to stop and provided proof of identity. Cameras positioned throughout the airport’s touchpoints can be used to identify the passenger every step of the way.

IDEMIA has already demonstrated its capabilities with respect to airport biometrics, having deployed facial recognition to venues such as the Los Angeles International Airport. But in combining this expertise with its mobile onboarding technologies, IDEMIA has engineered a solution that gives travelers more control over how their information is collected and shared, with the company noting that passengers can opt out of the system at any time.

In bringing the solution to the North American market, IDEMIA’s leadership see a considerable market opportunity, suggested Lisa Sullivan, the Senior Vice President of Travel and Transport for IDEMIA I&S North America.

“Prior to COVID, Americans took approximately 2.3 billion trips, over a one-year period, and this makes the need for the passenger experience to be even more frictionless and seamless as we return to pre-pandemic travel patterns,” she said. “With that experience and privacy in mind, the timing couldn’t be more ideal to launch our ID2Travel offering in North America to improve passenger flow and maintain a touchless experience, while balancing interoperability throughout the broader travel ecosystem.”

The North American launch of ID2Travel comes just a couple of weeks after IDEMIA’s announcement that it would provide biometric border control solutions for the Danish National Police force.
