Vivo is sticking with in-display fingerprint scanning for its next big smartphone, the Vivo Z1x.
A follow-up to the Vivo Z1Pro announced earlier this summer, the Z1x is slated to launch in India on September 6th. And in a teaser video posted on Twitter, Vivo is highlighting the device’s use of an in-display fingerprint scanner as the its key feature, while images of the phone itself also reveal a triple-camera rear-facing imaging system and a notch at the top of the device’s display.
That notch could potentially house a face-scanning system, and the Z1Pro did indeed support a face unlock feature itself. Nevertheless, Vivo is clearly banking on the relative novelty of in-display fingerprint scanning in promoting the Z1x.
In so doing, Vivo is part of a larger trend, with numerous smartphone brands embracing in-display fingerprint scanning as a means of differentiating their devices from the competition over the past several months. And for its part, Vivo was the brand that launched this trend when it became the first to feature an in-display fingerprint sensor in a smartphone with its Vivo X20 Plus UD device last year.
But it’s worth noting that ZTE, in announcing its new Axon 10 Pro smartphone this week, scarcely mentioned that device’s in-display fingerprint sensor. That may indicate that this technology is almost at a point where it’s considered a standard feature of new smartphones – at least those in the premium and mid-ranges in terms of price.
Other features of Vivo’s new Z1x smartphone, according to a tip from an unnamed source reported in GSMArena, include a 6.38″ Super AMOLED display, a Snapdragon 712 SoC processor, and a 4,500 mAh battery. The device will be sold through Flipkart, India’s popular mobile retailer.
