India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has launched the Sanchar Saathi mobile application, expanding its existing digital security initiative to provide enhanced mobile security features and fraud prevention capabilities to Indian mobile users. The launch represents the latest step in India’s comprehensive strategy to combat telecommunications fraud, following the mandatory implementation of Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) and Aadhaar-based biometric verification for SIM cards.
The new mobile app, released on January 17, 2025, builds upon the Sanchar Saathi web portal that was introduced in May 2023. The application enables users to report suspected fraud communications and unsolicited commercial communications directly from their call logs, while also allowing them to verify and manage mobile connections registered under their names. The functionality complements existing anti-fraud measures, including the international call alert system recently implemented by major carriers like Airtel.
“The Sanchar Saathi initiative provides a safe and secure environment where privacy and security of each customer are safeguarded,” said Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia during the application’s introduction. The app is now available for download on both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
Key features of the application include tools for blocking suspicious calls and messages, streamlined reporting mechanisms for fraudulent communications, and the ability to monitor active mobile connections associated with users’ identities. These features support India’s broader telecommunications security framework, which will include mandatory biometric authentication for SIM cards starting in 2025.
Alongside the app launch, the Department of Telecommunications unveiled two additional initiatives: the ‘Vision for National Broadband Mission 2.0’ and Intra-circle roaming capabilities at 4G mobile sites funded by the ‘Digital Bharat Nidhi.’
The DoT announced the launch through its official social media channels, encouraging users to “Scan for your digital safety today and access essential tools at your fingertips.” The initiative complements other recent security measures, including the Reserve Bank of India’s mandate for specific phone number series for bank communications, demonstrating a coordinated approach to combat digital fraud across multiple sectors.
