An important development emerged from the International Identity and Verifiable Credentials (IVC24) Summit held in Australia from October 3-4. A proof-of-concept demonstration showcased the successful validation of digital credentials across three continents—North America, Europe, and Australia. This achievement was highlighted by Christopher Goh, the National Harmonization Lead for Digital Identity at Austroads, the association representing Australian and New Zealand transport agencies.
Goh described the demo as a “landmark” event, noting that representatives were able to verify digital credentials certified against ISO standards at a mock-up Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoint. After mutual verification, participants proceeded to simulate boarding a flight using a TSA CAT 2 reader, successfully demonstrating the interoperability of digital IDs across international borders.
Olaf Grewe, Head of Product for Digital Identity & Access at National Australia Bank, also attended the event and commented on the significance of the demonstration in a LinkedIn post. He expressed excitement about proving interoperability between Australian, European, and U.S. mobile driver’s license implementations.
The demonstration involved multiple organizations, including Idemia, the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, and representatives from the French and Dutch governments. Additionally, Potential, a consortium working on the European Digital Identity Wallet, participated in the event. Goh extended gratitude to the wallet providers who contributed to making the proof-of-concept a success, acknowledging their efforts in advancing digital identity verification.
This successful demonstration underscores the progress being made toward global interoperability of digital identity systems. It highlights the potential for seamless international travel and enhanced security through standardized digital credentials.
