IDEMIA, in partnership with the Iowa Department of Transportation, has officially introduced Iowa’s mobile driver’s license feature, marking a significant step forward in digital identity verification. This initiative follows a ‘soft launch’ carried out in August, where selected businesses were engaged in mobile ID scanning tests. The mobile ID can now also facilitate smoother processing at TSA PreCheck lanes in Des Moines International Airport and Cedar Rapids Municipal Airport.
The registration process for the mobile driver’s license entails a selfie-based identity verification. Users are prompted to scan both sides of their physical driver’s license, and then take a selfie, which IDEMIA’s system verifies against the photo on the driver’s license to ensure the identity of the registrant. This biometric verification adds a layer of security to the digital identification process.
As outlined in an earlier report, the ‘soft launch’ in August was aimed at testing the technology across various businesses to ensure its efficiency and reliability. It also provided insights into user experience and the system’s readiness for a broader rollout.
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds expressed enthusiasm about being the pioneer state to implement a mobile ID system at such a large scale, underscoring the enhanced convenience and security it brings to Iowa residents.
“Iowa is the first state in the nation to roll out a mobile ID with a large number of businesses across the state capable of accepting the ID,” she said. “I’m so proud of the DOT and the Department of Revenue’s Alcoholic Beverages Division working together on an innovative solution that provides convenience and added security for Iowans as they use their IDs for a variety of purposes.”
With IDEMIA’s technology already being utilized in states like Oklahoma, Delaware, Arizona, and Mississippi, the successful launch in Iowa further positions IDEMIA as a significant player in the mobile identity verification arena, paving the way for broader adoption of digital identity technologies across the nation.
