IDEMIA Public Security North America has integrated Iowa’s mobile ID with the Samsung Wallet, broadening the digital ID’s reach to a larger user base.
Initially, IDEMIA announced its efforts on a mobile ID application for Iowa in 2021, revealing that a prototype had successfully met the ISO/IEC DIS 18013-5 standards for mobile driver’s licenses. This app was validated by an independent auditor, UL, using test data from an Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) provisioning system.
The official rollout of the mobile ID, a joint effort by IDEMIA and the Iowa DOT, occurred in October 2023. Shortly thereafter, in December 2023, IDEMIA announced a collaboration with Samsung to introduce an Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division (AZ MVD) digital ID to the Samsung Wallet.
Building on this successful partnership, IDEMIA now enables Samsung device users in Iowa to use mobile IDs as valid identity documents at Des Moines and Eastern Iowa airports, along with 25 other airports nationwide.
“Travelers who want to take advantage of this new capability will find that their Iowa mobile ID is a convenient option when going through the security process,” commented TSA Iowa Federal Security Director John Bright. “TSA will continue to embrace technology that improves security effectiveness while streamlining the passenger experience at airports.”
Originally launched in 2013, Samsung Wallet started as a platform for storing membership cards, coupons, and tickets. In 2015, Samsung upgraded it by incorporating Samsung Pay, allowing secure payments through Near Field Communication (NFC) and Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) technology.
Samsung Wallet has since evolved to include digital keys, identification cards, and cryptocurrency management. Samsung aims to match the expanding features of competing digital wallets from Apple and Google.
According to IDEMIA, their technology now supports digital IDs in six states, with Arizona and Iowa among the first to offer compatibility with Samsung Wallet.
