Italy has initiated a pilot program for its digital ID system, the IT Wallet, on October 23, 2024. This trial involves 50,000 participants who can now access digital versions of their driving licenses, health cards, and European Disability Cards using the “Io” app from the Ministry of the Interior. This phase is a step toward Italy’s goal of aligning with European Union standards, particularly those in the eIDAS regulation, aiming for a nationwide rollout by 2025.
Currently, these digital documents are used primarily in offline settings, functioning similarly to their physical counterparts. For instance, the digital driving license can be presented to law enforcement during routine checks, while the digital health card is suitable for booking medical appointments. This limited introduction serves as a testing phase, assessing the system’s practicality and effectiveness in everyday situations.
The program will expand in stages, increasing to 250,000 users by November 6, 2024, and reaching 1 million by November 20. Full nationwide availability is expected by December 4, with the comprehensive IT Wallet launch set for 2025. The final version will include not only identity documents but also various certificates, electoral records, and even subscriptions for cultural events.
This initiative is a crucial part of the European Digital Identity framework, aiming to simplify access to services and reduce dependency on intermediaries for identity verification. Discussions are ongoing about enhancing security through biometric authentication, which would bolster accuracy and guard against identity theft, ensuring compliance with EU regulations.
