The Kantara Initiative has appointed Dr. Carol Buttle as its first Chief Technology Officer (CTO). Dr. Buttle joins from the UK government’s Department of Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), where she was Head of Certification and Assurance. As a key architect of the UK Digital Identity & Attributes Trust Framework (DIATF), Dr. Buttle brings significant expertise in designing trust frameworks and understanding data privacy regulations.
In her new role, Dr. Buttle will work to expand Kantara’s influence in identity assurance, focusing on identity certification across new markets. She aims to guide the identity industry towards improved standards for the broader good of citizens, particularly the most vulnerable. Emphasizing the importance of certification beyond regulatory compliance, Dr. Buttle envisions her role as one that fosters greater trust and safety in identity management.
Kantara Executive Director Kay Chopard highlighted the strategic value of this newly created CTO position, particularly in driving international growth and improving interoperability in identity assurance. Dr. Buttle’s appointment follows recent additions to Kantara’s leadership, including James Keenan and David Nutbrown, which further strengthens the organization’s capabilities in certification delivery and regulatory compliance.
Kantara Board Chair Andrew Hughes added that Dr. Buttle’s regulatory expertise would be instrumental in supporting Kantara members engaging with US Federal Agencies and pursuing certification under the DIATF. Her thorough understanding of UK requirements and their potential application in the US will benefit Kantara’s certification programs and work groups.
