Malaysia’s national single sign-on identity management system, MyDigital ID, is now accessible via smartphones.
The app integrates several government services, such as MyJPJ, HRMIS Mobile, MySejahtera, and the MyGov portal, with plans for further integrations. The system uses facial recognition for registration, ensuring secure and standardized authentication for online transactions.
Financial institutions and e-wallet services are also showing interest in adopting this technology for customer authentication.
MyDigital ID, first announced by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in November of last year, aims to streamline access to various services while maintaining robust privacy and security standards. The system, while facilitating online identity authentication, does not replace the National Registration Identity Card (NRIC). It complies with Malaysia’s Personal Data Protection Act, and the government has initiated public awareness campaigns to educate citizens about its benefits.
According to MIMOS, under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), MyDigital ID is crucial for inclusive socio-economic growth, enhancing access to essential services like healthcare, education, and social security benefits.
It was reported earlier this month that Pertama Digital Bhd’s subsidiary, Dapat Vista (M) Sdn Bhd, had been contracted to provide the onboarding system for the MyDigital ID platform. Initially scheduled to launch in July of 2024, it appeared at that time that the timeline would be delayed by several months, as the contract spanned four months with an optional three-month extension.
Citizens can download the MyDigital ID app from the Apple App Store or Google Play and register for their digital ID, eliminating the need to visit kiosks.
