Malaysia is set to introduce a national digital identity ecosystem called the MyDigital ID Superapp, incorporating blockchain technology to enhance security and combat online fraud. The initiative is part of the country’s broader digital transformation strategy aimed at securing online transactions across public and private sectors. The latest development builds upon Malaysia’s existing MyDigital ID platform, which already provides mobile access to various government services.
The MyDigital ID Superapp will be built on the Malaysia Blockchain Infrastructure, overseen by the national research and development agency MIMOS. The platform includes features such as a digital wallet designed to streamline onboarding processes and reduce the need for multiple authentication systems. The advancement follows a recent mobile identity authentication solution launched by Maxis in Malaysia, demonstrating the country’s commitment to modernizing its digital identity infrastructure.
“This platform will simplify access to digital services while maintaining the highest standards of data security and user privacy,” said Dato’ Fadzli Shah, co-founder of MYEG’s public blockchain network Zetrix. The system does not store or access personal data during transactions, ensuring compliance with privacy regulations.
The initiative aims to facilitate cross-border interoperability by enabling businesses to authenticate users with greater accuracy. MYEG’s Layer 1 public blockchain network, Zetrix, which recently launched its ZCert service for Chinese Digital ID verification, supports not only MyDigital ID but also digital identities for Chinese nationals, business entities, and the World ID network, enabling international transactions.
Commercial service providers will be able to integrate digital identity management through Malaysia’s MyDigital ID, allowing direct logins into existing mobile apps or offering their services as mini-apps on the super-app. The integration is designed to simplify identity verification processes, reduce operational costs, and enhance customer experiences.
The blockchain-based platform provides a secure and tamper-proof digital identity framework to prevent identity theft, phishing attacks, and other forms of cyber fraud. The proof of concept for the MyDigital ID Superapp is scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2025, with implementation planned in phases. The timeline represents an adjustment to earlier plans, following previous delays in the platform’s development.
The initiative matches broader regional efforts to establish blockchain-based digital identity verification systems, as discussed at China-ASEAN ministerial events. The MyDigital ID Superapp could serve as a model for other countries in Southeast Asia seeking to strengthen their digital identity frameworks, particularly as nations like Vietnam implement stricter digital identity requirements for online services.
