Mauritius has officially launched its Mobil ID digital identity card, a major milestone in the nation’s ongoing digital transformation efforts under the “Digital Mauritius 2030” strategy.
Developed in partnership with Thales and Harel Mallac Technologies, the Mobil ID allows citizens to manage personal information, such as updating addresses or reporting lost physical IDs, and enables secure electronic document signing. The system is designed with dual authentication features to protect against identity theft and enhance user security. It also aims to streamline administrative processes for businesses and government agencies, improving overall efficiency.
At the launch event, led by Minister of Information Technology Deepak Balgobin, the importance of this initiative was emphasized as Mauritius becomes the first African country to adopt a digital identity card that meets international ISO standards. This move positions Mauritius as a leader in digital innovation and reflects its commitment to building a secure and connected digital ecosystem.
The Mobil ID is a crucial part of the broader Digital Mauritius 2030 initiative, which aims to transform Mauritius into a digitally-driven economy by enhancing digital infrastructure, expanding 5G networks, and modernizing public services. The strategy also prioritizes digital skills development to support the country’s transition into a knowledge-based, tech-driven economy.
By fostering innovation and improving public service accessibility, Digital Mauritius 2030 seeks to create a more efficient, transparent, and secure environment for both citizens and businesses.
Minister Balgobin reiterated the government’s dedication to maintaining Mauritius at the forefront of technological progress while ensuring robust data protection measures are in place. The Mobil ID launch represents a significant step towards achieving the goals of the Digital Mauritius 2030 strategy, helping to drive the nation’s digital transformation forward.
