MEF, a global industry association focused on network and technology services, has unveiled its Network-as-a-Service (NaaS) Network APIs at MWC 2025 in Barcelona. The new APIs enable applications to dynamically request and adjust network performance on demand, supporting the development of an AI-driven economy. The launch builds upon recent momentum in network API standardization, following the collaborative efforts of major U.S. carriers to implement standardized 5G network APIs.
The capabilities of these APIs are being demonstrated at the GSMA Open Gateway Showcase, featuring a collaboration between Colt and Orange. The demonstration uses open-source CAMARA APIs to showcase Quality on Demand (QoD) capabilities that can enhance digital services across gaming, entertainment streaming, smart mobility, and Industry 4.0 applications. The development follows the successful deployment of network APIs by French mobile operators under the GSMA Open Gateway initiative.
“Through this showcase MEF, Colt and Orange are bringing to life the benefits that open QoD APIs can deliver,” said Henry Calvert, Head of Networks at GSMA. “By integrating QoD APIs, enterprise developers can enhance a whole range of digital services from online gaming and entertainment streaming through to powering smart mobility, beyond line of sight aviation and industry 4.0.”
The integration combines MEF APIs with CAMARA APIs to enable seamless switching between fixed and mobile networks. The convergence supports various use cases where quality management is essential for service delivery, particularly in SD-WAN implementations for businesses. The system leverages advanced network capabilities made possible through the evolution of 5G networks and IoT connectivity.
“This ‘Quality on Demand’ use case applies to SD-WAN design for businesses, supports many other use cases where managing quality is required in order to deliver the right level of service,” said Emmanuel Rochas, CEO of Orange Wholesale International. “This project reinforces our commitment to providing our customers with a seamless user experience across our networks, in a federated approach with our peers.”
The GSMA Open Gateway initiative provides a standardized API framework for exposing network services, enabling developers to create innovative applications while helping telecom operators monetize their networks. The development is part of the broader integration of AI and 5G technologies, where 5G networks provide the infrastructure necessary for AI systems to process and analyze large volumes of data. The initiative has gained significant traction, with major communications providers joining the ecosystem to enhance mobile authentication and security capabilities.
