Guatemalan Payment App Gets Biometric Selfie Onboarding

July 13, 2020

Mobbeel will be providing digital onboarding services for PRONET’s new Akisí app. PRONET is a Guatemalan company that allows users to pay bills and purchase goods at commercial establishments through one centralized payment service. It is currently in use at 6,000 locations in Guatemala, with an additional 5,000 locations spread across 34 states in the US.

The Akisí app is an e-Wallet that will allow people to access those services through their smartphones. PRONET is hoping that Akisí will make digital financial services more accessible to people in rural areas and promote cashless transactions throughout the country.

For its part, Mobbeel will help prevent fraud with its MobbScan onboarding solution. MobbScan uses document recognition to verify the authenticity of an official government ID, and then uses facial recognition to compare that ID to a live photo of the individual. In that regard, MobbScan is comparable to similar onboarding solutions from companies like FacePhi and Onfido, and will ensure that everyone using the Akisí app is the person they claim to be.

PRONET is launching Akisí with the support of the Fundación Génesis Empresarial, a non-profit organization that works to promote financial and digital inclusion through strategic loans. Mobbeel, meanwhile, is working with Veentrix, which acts as its local partner in Central America.

The Akisí app is currently available for Android devices.
