The University of Victoria (UVic) has introduced a mobile “ONECard”, becoming the first post-secondary institution in British Columbia to offer a contactless digital ID card. Students, faculty, and staff with compatible Apple or Android devices can now download the digital card to their wallets for streamlined campus transactions. With a simple tap of a phone or smart watch, users can buy food, access buildings, borrow books, shop at the bookstore, and more.
The mobile ONECard works by integrating with a user’s digital wallet on a compatible Apple or Android device. Once downloaded, the card uses NFC technology, so when a user taps their phone or smartwatch near an NFC-enabled reader on campus—such as at a food vendor, library, or entry point—the system authenticates the user’s identity via their linked digital credentials.
The card connects to the university’s system through Transact Mobile Credential, enabling the user to access services like making purchases, entering buildings, or checking their account balance without needing to swipe a physical card.
“Post-secondary students in today’s world expect a mobile-first experience when it comes to buying goods and accessing services on campus,” said Jim Forbes, Senior Director of Campus Engagement at UV. “We’re excited to be able to provide this technology to modernize and enhance day-to-day transactions.”
“Getting food and going to the gym with just my phone has only made my campus life more convenient,” said Simrit Grewal, a UVic undergraduate student. “I appreciate that I can see my ONECard Flex funds directly on the digital card, and I now have one less thing I need to keep track of!”
Despite its widespread campus use, the mobile ONECard will not be accepted as official ID for exams, where students must still present a physical card.
