Motorola Edge S Smartphone to Feature In-Display Fingerprint Sensor: Report

January 25, 2021

In what appears to be shaping up to be the next major trend in smartphone technology, Motorola is rumored to be preparing to launch its new Motorola Edge S smartphone featuring an in-display optical fingerprint sensor for biometric authentication.

Motorola Edge S Smartphone to Feature In-Display Fingerprint Sensor: Report

According to NewsBytes, the phone should be available to consumers in China on January 26, and will be the latest to feature in-display technology, following in the footsteps of Samsung’s popular Galaxy and Note lines, and on the heels of constant rumors that Apple is looking to include the feature in possible future releases of its iPhone and iPad lineups.

Though the last couple of years have seen face biometrics take center stage as the mobile biometric modality of choice — a trend set by Apple with the release of its iPhone X in 2017 — Apple’s iPhone SE 2 launched in the first half of 2020 featuring a return to Touch ID and fingerprint authentication, as a way of keeping the cost of the phone down in order to compete with other less expensive smartphones.

Google then followed suit with the release of its Pixel 4a smartphone, which saw the re-introduction of its iconic rear-mounted fingerprint sensor after the feature was removed in favor of of Face Unlock when Google launched the Pixel 4 in 2019.

Aside from its in-display sensor, the Edge S is also expected to be the first smartphone to come equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 870 chipset, feature a 12GB RAM/256GB storage setup, and a 6.7-inch Full HD+ OLED screen with a refresh rate of 105Hz.

Official pricing, availability, and specifications are expected to be released by Motorola on January 26.
