Pakistan’s National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has launched a nationwide campaign urging citizens to cancel the identification cards of deceased family members, addressing a significant backlog in death record updates despite the registration of 7 million deaths in union councils. The campaign extends NADRA’s ongoing efforts to modernize Pakistan’s national identity system, which has recently included the development of a new mobile application and enhanced security features for identity documents.
The campaign seeks to streamline identity document processing for surviving family members. Under current regulations, a deceased person’s immediate family members – including children, spouse, and parents – can cancel ID cards at any NADRA center without charge. The process is particularly important as NADRA continues to expand its digital identity services, including its Pak ID platform which requires accurate and up-to-date citizen records.
As part of its outreach efforts, NADRA is using SMS notifications to inform citizens about the importance of canceling deceased relatives’ ID cards. The authority notes that failing to cancel these documents can create complications for surviving family members when they need to process their own identity documents, particularly as NADRA implements new security features and verification processes across its identity management system.
For cases where death registration information is incorrect, NADRA advises citizens to contact their local union council secretary for record corrections. The process ensures the accuracy of the national identity database while facilitating proper document management for surviving family members. The verification system is integrated with NADRA’s broader digital infrastructure, which includes biometric authentication and electronic document verification capabilities.
The campaign represents part of NADRA’s ongoing efforts to maintain accurate national identity records. The authority has emphasized that canceling deceased persons’ ID cards is not just an administrative preference but a legal requirement, essential for maintaining the integrity of Pakistan’s national identity system and preventing potential identity fraud.
