The Natural Security Alliance has launched its Natural Security mobile app on iOS and Android.
The app relies primarily on fingerprint biometrics, collected through the user’s smartphone, for authentication. Moreover, it’s meant to be almost hands-free, working wirelessly with compatible readers so that all the user needs to do is scan her finger.
Having developed it in collaboration with the French Data Protection Authority, the Natural Security Alliance is aiming to make the app a kind of single-sign on system for authentication in a range of applications, from access control to banking and payments. The app is currently being rolled out in the US at San Jose State University and in France through the Lille-based Envies de Saison fast-food chain, and the Natural Security Alliance says more partnerships are in the pipeline, such as integration into the Fivory mobile wallet that will make the Natural Security app compatible at the Auchan hypermarket chain.
The app arrives at a time of growing excitement about mobile biometrics, with a recent report predicting that in 2018, all new smartphones shipped will feature embedded fingerprint sensors.
