New Honor Smartphone Highlights AI, Sophisticated Biometrics

November 1, 2018

“…it’s using the front-facing camera system to enable 3D facial recognition in an authentication system that may be able to compete with Apple’s Face ID in terms of technological sophistication.”

Huawei’s Honor smartphone brand has become the latest to make a big bet on artificial intelligence with its newest smartphone.

Dubbed the Honor Magic2, the new device is said to be the world’s first smartphone featuring a dual-core NPU processor, in the form of a Kirin 980 chip. And that processing power is being leveraged to enhance the user experience with YOYO, a voice-based virtual assistant. Having just officially announced its new flagship smartphone, Honor hasn’t yet made a detailed case about why this AI assistant will be different from others such as Apple’s Siri and Samsung’s Bixby, but in a statement the Huawei brand asserted that YOYO will “deliver an unparalleled and, scenario-based user experience that makes Honor Magic2 the smartest AI phone available on the market.”

The smartphone’s AI technology will also be used to enhance the device’s imaging capabilities. The Honor Magic2 features two three-camera imaging systems, one forward facing and one rear-facing. Honor has emulated Google’s approach by leveraging AI to fine-tune the images captured by these camera systems, such as with computer-generated bokeh effects; and it’s using the front-facing camera system to enable 3D facial recognition in an authentication system that may be able to compete with Apple’s Face ID in terms of technological sophistication.

Meanwhile, the Honor Magic2 also features a 6.39-inch display with no notch, and an in-display fingerprint sensor – a premium biometric security feature that Huawei also combined with 3D facial recognition in its Huawei Mate 20 device announced last month. These technological features should make a compelling case for the Honor Magic2, though it’s only going to be available in China for the foreseeable future, with a launch date set for November 6th.
