Innovatrics has announced mobile palm print recognition technology that uses common mobile phones and IP cameras, eliminating the need for additional scanners. The company says it is the first to offer this capability for both verification and identification purposes.
Innovatrics argues that palm prints, especially when both palms are used, can provide higher accuracy than facial recognition and can replace faces as a modality for those who prefer not to share facial images.
Palm prints share unique characteristics with fingerprints and can be used for identity verification without specialized scanners. Innovatrics’ algorithm works with standard smartphones and IP cameras, allowing for quick deployment. This is useful in scenarios where facial recognition is not feasible, such as when individuals wear head covers.
The technology enables smartphones to capture palm prints, making it applicable for payment verification and access control. A simple hand wave in front of a camera can unlock doors. This method can also serve as a second factor in passwordless access systems.
The Innovatrics algorithm achieves a False Match Ratio (FMR) of 0.00001 percent and a False Non-Match Rate (FNMR) of 0.54 percent. The system has been tested with a wide range of cameras, from high-end to low-end smartphones, ensuring compatibility with various devices.
The announcement comes just weeks after Innovatrics offered details about its significant strides in enhancing its facial recognition technology. As demonstrated in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Face Recognition Technology Evaluation (FRTE) 1:N benchmark, Innovatrics was able to cut its error rate in half, and the company achieved a top-13 placement in an overall ranking of 152 vendors.
