The Japanese site Mac Otakara has shared a mockup of what is ostensibly supposed to be the iPhone 13. The design is based on leaked schematics obtained through sources at Alibaba.
If the designs do eventually prove to be accurate, the iPhone 13 will be a 5.5″ device with ultra-thin bezels and no notch. It will also boast a TrueDepth and FaceTime camera setup under the display, which could be realized with Samsung technology.
Some of the other features break from the conventional rumor wisdom. For example, Mac Otakara reports that the phone will have a USB-C connector, though analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has previously predicted that the iPhone 13 will be a completely wireless device, and other prognosticators have generally echoed those sentiments.
To be clear, Mac Otakara indicated that the mockup depicts only one of the many iPhone 13 prototypes currently in development, and that the final model will most likely not look exactly like the one depicted in the recent video. Mac Otakara indicated that Apple is still exploring different camera layouts, and that the company is testing a camera system that would be placed at the bottom of the screen.
The iPhone 13 is not expected to arrive until 2021. As it stands, Apple is yet to announce this year’s anticipated iPhone 12, so the plans for the iPhone 13 have almost certainly not been finalized.
The iPhone 12 is expected to deliver 5G capabilities, with rumors suggesting that prices will start at $649 for the 5.4-inch model. There has also been considerable speculation about the potential return of Touch ID through some form of in-display fingerprint recognition. In the meantime, COVID-19 disruptions could delay the mass production of the phone, which would limit its availability if and when it does make it to store shelves later in the fall.
