The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC) has announced the launch of “REAL ID Thursdays,” a new initiative to increase accessibility for residents seeking REAL ID-compliant identification ahead of the federal deadline. Beginning March 20, 2025, NJMVC Licensing Centers will dedicate Thursdays to REAL ID issuance, adding approximately 4,500 new appointment slots weekly.
The program comes as the federal REAL ID enforcement deadline of May 7, 2025, approaches. After this date, travelers will need REAL ID-compliant identification or alternative federal documents, such as a valid U.S. passport, to board domestic flights. The deadline represents the final phase of the REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005 in response to post-9/11 security recommendations.
To obtain a REAL ID in New Jersey, residents must present specific documentation including two proofs of residential address, verification of Social Security number, and six points of identification. All documents must be original or certified copies, unexpired, and in English with appropriate state or municipal seals. The enhanced verification process meets Department of Homeland Security standards for secure identification documents.
Acceptable proofs of residence include current New Jersey driver’s licenses or non-driver ID cards, utility or credit card bills from the past 90 days, and bank or credit union statements issued within the previous 60 days. The stringent documentation requirements are part of nationwide efforts to strengthen identity verification and prevent fraud.
While REAL ID is not mandatory for all residents, it is recommended for those who regularly use their state-issued identification for domestic air travel. Those who do not obtain a REAL ID will need to present alternative federally approved identification for air travel after the enforcement date. New Jersey joins several other states, including Illinois and California, in expanding REAL ID services ahead of the deadline.
The NJMVC’s initiative comes amid a broader national transition toward enhanced identity verification, including the emergence of mobile driver’s licenses and digital identification systems. These technological advances are expected to complement traditional REAL ID-compliant physical documents in the coming years.
